The Circadian Cycle

Understanding Naturopathy: A Return to Natural Laws

Naturopathy is based on a simple truth: the body has an innate ability to heal itself when placed in the right conditions. It is not a medicine of reaction, but a medicine of prevention, optimization, and evolution. Rather than fighting symptoms, it seeks to eliminate the root cause of imbalance. Through natural means such as nutrition, exercise, rest, and exposure to natural light, naturopathy helps restore harmony between body and mind. It does not treat disease; it supports vitality.

The Circadian Rhythm: The Body’s Master Clock

Our biology is tuned like a musical score: every organ, every hormone, every enzyme follows a precise timeline over the course of 24 hours. This rhythm is orchestrated by a structure in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which uses natural light as its metronome. When we honor this rhythm, the body functions in harmony: digestion, sleep, energy, mood, immunity… everything naturally balances itself.

But when light signals are disrupted — for example, by screen use in the evening or waking late without exposure to sunlight — the music becomes disordered. Inflammation, fatigue, and digestive and hormonal issues begin to take hold.

Dysregulation: When the Right Signals Come at the Wrong Time

The body doesn’t just respond to the type of signals it receives, but above all to when they are received. Eating late in the evening, for example, diverts resources away from cellular repair toward digestion, to the detriment of the liver, lymphatic system, and memory consolidation. Similarly, exposure to blue light after sunset reduces melatonin, increases cortisol, and disrupts deep sleep.

The result? Emotional reactivity, poor insulin regulation, appetite disorders (through leptin), and disruption of the gut microbiome.

Practically Speaking: How to Realign Your Biological Rhythm

Here are simple, effective, and powerful actions you can start applying today:

1. In the Morning:

• Wake up at the same time every day, ideally at sunrise.

• Step outside within the first 5 to 30 minutes, without sunglasses, to expose your eyes to natural light.

• Have a protein- and healthy fat-rich breakfast to stabilize your energy.

2. During the Day:

• Move your body, ideally in natural daylight.

• Avoid frequent snacking: stick to an eating window of 8 to 12 hours.

• Maximize your exposure to natural light, even on cloudy days (10,000 lux outdoors > 1,000 lux indoors).

3. In the Evening:

• Turn off screens 2 to 3 hours before bed.

• Use candles, red lights, or low-intensity bulbs.

• Wear blue light-blocking glasses.

• Take an Epsom salt bath (magnesium sulfate, unscented) to support relaxation and detoxification.

4. And in Winter:

• If you live in a low-sunlight region, supplement with infrared panels or full-spectrum lamps.

• Consistency matters more than intensity: even a small gesture repeated daily has a big impact.

Evolution Through Alignment

You don’t need to chase after complicated solutions. What your body truly longs for is a return to simple, natural, and consistent rhythms. By respecting your circadian rhythm, you reactivate the deep biology of regeneration: melatonin production, autophagy activation, hormonal balance, efficient digestion, and inner peace.

This isn’t about strict discipline—it’s a dance with light, the seasons, and the innate wisdom of your own body. What you’re experiencing isn’t a battle against fatigue or anxiety, but an opportunity for inner transformation.
